4-8-8-4 w/DCC & Sound (4th release includes one w/o DCC or sound)

The Athearn N Scale 4-8-8-4 Big Boy, is the culmination of the art of design and tooling, integrating the latest innovations in electronic technology. The N Scale Big Boy model has been developed from the outset as the finest three dimensional operating miniature representation of the prototype available.

Features include:

• Boiler backhead with full details.
• Individually applied detail parts such as piping, valves, generators, etc.
• Blackened metal wheels suitable for operation on Code 55 track.
• Eccentric cranks operating on both sides in correct direction.
• Front and rear engines (cylinders and coupled drive wheel sets), both pivot for 11" recommended min. radius.
• Pilot has open/closed positions. Coupler pocket can be inserted to mount coupler after removal of dummy coupler.
• Headlights and tender lighting feature directional light change.
• Five-pole, skewed armature motor with two flywheels for very smooth running.
• Undecorated versions include all parts for that prototype.
• Dual-function SoundTraxx® Tsunami® DCC Decoder sound.
• DCC decoder automatically senses the power supply type (either DC or NMRA compliant DCC system).
• Hand held remote control unit for DC operation.

Overview

This stunning reproduction of the 4-8-8-4 Big Boy is the result of a focused determination to accomplish one thing: create the finest operating miniature representation of the prototype available.

Giving life to all the details are authentic sounds that are channeled through a factory installed DCC and soundboard with speakers. The DCC decoder automatically senses what type of power supply is in use (conventional DC or NMRA compliant DCC) and adapts its functions. The modeler doesn’t have to do a thing.

Functions and sounds available to DCC users include:

• Bell
• Whistle
• Water injector
• Air release
• Blower hiss
• Fire box door
• Lighting direction
• Coupling
• Brake squeal
• Conductor’s voice
• Sand release
• Cylinder cock/flange squeal

A handheld wireless controller is included (With the first release) for use with conventional DC power supplies. With it, modelers can control six sound functions as well as speed and direction.

The 4-8-8-4 Big Boy includes a history book and instruction book for quick reference

Inventory is a fluid commodity.  It changes by the hour (sometimes by the minute). To retain our pricing structure we maintain stock levels designed to turnover 6 times each year. We cannot guarantee stock status till we have an order in hand. All product is subject to prior sale. If we confirm that we have it, and, while we are waiting for the order it sells, you would be upset that we did not hold it.
We used to hold items but learned a VERY EXPENSIVE lesson. When we held items for customers’ orders, the order never materialized 80%+ of the time.  We lost out on the orders placed while the item was on hold.  Also we wasted staff time that could have been used to pull actual orders.
Since we are well known for finding older stock the fact that it may not be on our shelves at this minute does not mean we can’t get it. So, as we spell out on our terms pages, we don’t do it anymore. You may, however, call in and we will tell you if the items are available and if possible attempt to locate what we don’t have while you are on the phone.
