G.E. P42 Genesis

Background Information:

The Amtrak P42 locomotive was pre-dated by the P40, which was originally known as the AMD-103, or "Genesis" locomotive.   "Genesis locomotive" collectively refers to the P40, P42, and P32.  (The P32 is a third-rail capable locomotive that operates only in the Northeast).   The P40 was originally delivered in 1993 with the first order of P42's following in late 1996 and early 1997.  The P40 is a 4000 horsepower locomotive, while the P42 is a 4200 horsepower locomotive.

External details on the P40 and P42 are very similar with the P42 lacking the warning lights and hostler window of the P40.   With Amtrak realizing that the warning lights flashed back into the cab, and the hostler window was not necessary, the P40s were modified so that they are virtual carbon-copies of the more numerous P42.  Amtrak rosters a total of 44 P40 locomotive and a whopping 207 P42 locomotives.  Kato has chosen to produce the P42 locomotive based on the large numbers of P42's that have been produced, coupled with the fact that Amtrak is rebuilding their P40's to resemble P42's.

Amtrak's P42 and P40 locomotives have virtually replaced the EMD F40PH, once the mainline passenger locomotive of choice.   Recent rosters show only 6 F40PH's in active Amtrak service, although additional F40PH's are occasionally called upon in emergencies.

Model Features:
  • All models are equipped with Kato's five-pole motor with dual brass flywheels
  • Factory equipped with Kato's fully-automatic knuckle coupler.
  • Front and rear Bright White LED Headlights will be equipped with a "flicker free" circuit.  This built-in capacitor will eliminate the flickering light effects of "back EMF," often caused when the electrical current to the model is temporarily interrupted.  This usually happens when crossing over a turnout and the model "thinks" it is about to reverse direction.
  • "DCC Friendly" for easy drop-in installation of digital decoder.
  • Highly-detailed printing with warning labels and builder plates.
  • MRC has also crafted a drop-in sound decoder that will work with the N scale GE P42 “Genesis”

* Final pricing may differ from initially listed price.

Painted and decaled for a special anniversary excursion train, Amtrak #100 operated in this special post office livery for a period of 18 months (from 1999 - 2000) to commemorate the US Post office Centennial.

Amtrak Unit #100 is adorned on all four sides with post office related decorations, including stamps from all across the services' history. The Kobo custom model will replicate this engine as it appeared in 2000, specifically, as the locomotive had at least one major change done to its appearance over its 18 month lifespan wearing these colors.

Item Description Pricing & Order Link

Stock Checks:

Inventory is a fluid commodity.  It changes by the hour (sometimes by the minute). To retain our pricing structure we maintain stock levels designed to turnover 6 times each year. We cannot guarantee stock status till we have an order in hand. All product is subject to prior sale. If we confirm that we have it, and, while we are waiting for the order it sells, you would be upset that we did not hold it.
We used to hold items but learned a VERY EXPENSIVE lesson. When we held items for customers’ orders, the order never materialized 80%+ of the time.  We lost out on the orders placed while the item was on hold.  Also we wasted staff time that could have been used to pull actual orders.
Since we are well known for finding older stock the fact that it may not be on our shelves at this minute does not mean we can’t get it. So, as we spell out on our terms pages, we don’t do it anymore.
You may, however, call in and we will tell you if the items are available and if possible attempt to locate what we don’t have while you are on the phone.
