Part #: Wal-933-3237 Superior
Paper Company - Cornerstone Series(R) |
Click photo to see large view |
Paper mills are some of the busiest spots along the
railroads that serve them. Tons of raw materials arrive in specialized
cars including woodchip gons and pulpwood flats, along with
a variety of chemicals and slurries that are shipped in tank
cars. Finished products are also shipped by rail, typically
in special service box cars.
The Superior Paper kit comes with two complete buildings to
begin operations, which could also be used to model a variety
of other industries. The first step in paper-making is the kraft
(German for strength) mill, where wood is transformed into pulp.
This modern steel structure is complete with large smokestacks
and a variety of other details. (Used by itself, this building
makes a great modern powerhouse for an electric utility or major
industry.) Pulp is processed in the Main Building, a large brick
structure that's complete with pulp vats, loading docks, separate
windows and many other details. Detailed instructions are provided
for the entire complex, along with colorful sign decals.
Sized right to look right on any railroad, this modern industry
is perfect for use with the 60' Pulpwood Cars 3-Packs (932-39801

Part #: Wal-933-3241 Glacier Gravel - Cornerstone
Series®
|
Click photo to see large view |
The smooth operation of your railroad all
rests on ballast. Without ballast your railroad is mud!
Railroads have an enormous appetite for crushed rock. A
mile of mainline can gobble up thousands of tons. Glacier
Gravel Co. will help satisfy your railroads appetite for
rock.
Glaciers hefty rock crusher is typical of those found
at quarries across the continent. Here, hard rock is
crushed into 3" to 6" chunks and loaded
into ballast hoppers for a trip to the dumping site. These hoppers are equipped
with special longitudinal doors that allow the ballast to be dumped on both
sides of the rail.
Glacier Gravel Co. features corrugated construction on a heavy poured concrete
foundation/loading tunnel. Conveyors to a truck dump and feeder from the quarry
complete the facility. Rock crushers similar to this have been in use since the
1940s, so Glacier Gravel Co. will fit perfectly into transition and modern era
layouts. |

Part #: Wal-933-3243 Al's Victory Service - Cornerstone Serires(R) |
Click photo to see large view |
Not too long ago, stations like Al's could be found at every
busy city intersection and along most major highways. Premium
was 25 cents a gallon, maps were free, restrooms were clean.
There was a mechanic on duty who could fix anything. And Al
always wore a spotless uniform when he came out to pump your
gas, check the oil and wash the windows.
Introduced in the late 1930s, box style stations like this sprang
up from coast to coast and remained a standard well into the
1950s. Combining the office, restrooms and service bays into
one structure, they provided a uniform, neat appearance that
attracted motorists. Lots of windows made them bright and cheerful,
as did the enameled steel walls decorated in company colors.
Although newer stations have taken their place, many survive
today as independent garages, body shops, retail stores and
offices. A few have even been converted into private homes!
This easy-to-build kit features authentic styling that looks
great on any vintage or modern street scene. Optional pumps
are included to match your era from the late 1930s to 80s, along
with colorful decal signs for the finishing touch. Just add
vehicles, figures and interior details, available separately,
to create a busy scene anywhere along your layout. |

Part #: Wal-933-3245 Ice House & Icing Platform - Cornerstone Series(R) |
Click photo to see large view |
From the 1880s to the 1970s, ice-cooled reefers were a fixture
of railroading. Solid trains raced across country with their
perishable loads. Supplying ice for the cars in transit was
a huge industry. Railroads built ice houses and platforms, like
this kit, about every 250-300 miles. Here, entire trains could
be serviced and on the move in minutes.
This complete kit includes a detailed Ice House, based on a
prototype in Antigo, Wisconsin, plus a modular Icing Platform,
from a Pacific Fruit Express design. Lots of add-on details,
including an optional platform roof (used in warm areas to
shade

Part #: Wal-933-3247 Western Flood Loader - Cornerstone Series(R) |
Click photo to see large view |
Put big action in a small space with this
exciting new industry on your railroad. With today's "just in time" coal
delivery, meeting customer schedules demands equipment that's
up to the job. Now in use in both eastern and western coal
fields,
these big buildings are essentially storage silos that hold
tons of coal for reloading unit trains. Since the actual
mine and processing operations are often miles away, this
building
and conveyor can be placed trackside, to imply the presence
of a bigger mine operation located off your layout.
The basic building includes a variety of roof-top machinery
that puts realistic detail in this highly visible location.
Modular conveyor sections can be arranged in a variety of ways,
or combined with other buildings like the New River Mining Company,
(933-3221) or Glacier Gravel (933-3241)to model a complete scene.
And, the stackable silo sections allow you to easily build a
tall or short structure that can fit where overhead clearance
may be limited.

Part #: Wal-933-3248 Walking Beam / "Horse Head" Oil Pump - Cornerstone Series(R) |
Click photo to see large view |
Finding oil is hard work - and so is getting
it out of the ground. If the oil is thin enough and there's
enough underground pressure,
it may flow into the well on its own. This may continue for
a few hours or a few years, but in time, the pressure drops.
Today, nearly 95% of all US oil wells require pumps to stay
in production and one of the most common is the walking beam
or "horse head."
Seen alone or in groups wherever oil is found, this new kit
is a great way to model a part of this vital industry anywhere
on your layout. It's typical of American designs in use since
the 1920s and includes a detailed stationary diesel power
plant, walking beam, rear crank and counterweight, along
with the
odd-shaped "horse head" front counterweight that
gives the machines their nickname
Designed from the ground up to be a WORKING model, the kit includes
a hidden drive. Whenever you're ready, just add the Universal
Gearbox and Motor Drive Kit #933-1050 sold separately, to power
your pump. Complete instructions and precise engineering produce
a great looking, easy to build replica.

Say the word steel to even the most casual observer and they
picture these towering giants. Looming hundreds of feet into
the skyline, their maze of pipes and equipment stands in stark
contrast to the lines of newer buildings. Running nonstop, no
other part of a steel works generates as much rail traffic.
Hoppers bring up load after load of iron ore or taconite, coke
and limestone. Hot metal cars carry the molten steel to the
converters, while slag cars take their loads to the dump.
At last, here's a model that captures the power of the prototype
and still fits the average layout. This complete kit includes
the furnace, stoves, dust collectors and cleaning system, piping,
cast house, hearth, skip hoist, high line supports - over 300
parts in all. Yet, it's designed for easy construction and includes
complete instructions. Your finished model can be used as the

Once installed, they provide a smooth, realistic transition
between 3-D foreground scenes and printed or painted backgrounds.
This curtain-wall building front makes it easy to blend your
foreground scenery with your backdrop. Because of its thin profile,
its perfect for use on shelf-style layouts or up against your
module skyboard. Variety Printing includes the streetside facade
plus decals with several business names.

Part #: Wal-933-3257 Union Station - Cornerstone Series(R) Plastic Kits |
Click photo to see large view |
For generations of travelers, Union Station was the magical
gateway to and from the world. Here is where the journeys of
the finest trains on the line started and ended. Where travelers
rushed to make their connections. And thousands of commuters
began and ended their workday.
Where space was limited in larger towns and cities, two or more
railroads would often combine their resources to build and operate
major terminal stations. Monuments to the power and success
of railroading, they also projected the spirit of the community
they served and the promise of excellent service for anyone
who traveled by train. Now, Walthers unveils the Union Station,
a fitting tribute to the grand terminals that served railroading
for over 100 years.
Designed to capture the look and feel of similar prototypes
across America, it puts big detail in a small space without
overwhelming your layout. All the classic design elements are
here, from the tall support columns to the nonworking clock
on the roof. Each wall captures the look of cut-stone construction.
Separate doors and windows, large skylights, vents decals and
more are all included to build a realistic model.

Part #: Wal-933-3258 Butterfly-Style Station Platform Shelters pkg(8) - Cornerstone Series(R) Plastic Kits |
Click photo to see large view |
Each Section Measures: 6-1/8 x 1-1/4 x
1-3/8" 15.3
x 3.1 x 3.4cm
From suburban station to busy city terminal, the platform was
the first and last stop for every passenger. Tall walkways allowed
passengers fast and easy access to and from trains. The hard
surface made it easy to wheel baggage and mail carts into place,
as well as supplies for the diner or other cars. And since no
one liked being too wet or warm, a roof provided some protection
from the elements.
As an alternate to costly train sheds, American railroads tried
three distinct styles of station platforms including the Busch,
Umbrella and Butterfly types. Of these, the Butterfly (so named
because of its up-swept, wing-shaped roof) was cheaper to build
and eliminated the maintenance headaches of other designs. Providing
plenty of ventilation for engine exhaust and just enough protection
from the sun and rain for passengers, Butterfly platforms gained
widespread popularity early in the 20th century.
Now you can build a detailed terminal scene for your passenger
service with this all-new kit. Based on the almost universal
Butterfly design, platforms of this type can be found at stations
in big cities and outlying suburbs where they have served passengers
for many years.
Parts for eight complete platforms (each 6" 15cm long)
are provided, and the kit has a modular design so longer platforms
can easily be built to fit your space. Optional underground
"subway" stair ways, "wooden" walkway crossings
between tracks, platform benches, detailed "steel" columns
and platform signboards are all included.
Ideal for use with any steam-, transition- or diesel-era layout,
the platforms look great alongside Union Station (933-3257,
sold separately) and similar station facilities. |

Generations of Americans have called brick apartments like these "home." Whether
bright and new in the steam-era, run-down on the "wrong side of the tracks" in
the 1970s, or remodeled as upscale condos in the present era, Parkview
Terrace Apartments are a great way to add detailed big city buildings along
your
railroad right-of-way. Parkview Terrace is available in two color combinations,

Part #: Wal-933-3260 3 Stall Modern Roundhouse - Cornerstone Series(R) Plastic Kit |
Click photo to see large view
|
The Roundhouse was a hallmark of steam-era railroading, and some of these classics are still used today. No matter the weather, workers could easily inspect and service locos under cover. Size was based on the number of engines coming and going in any 24-hour period, with the busiest terminals requiring full-circle roundhouses. Our authentic North American-style model includes three stalls on 10-degree centers to make the most of your available space like the prototype. And with a modular design, you can add as many stalls as your railroad requires using the Modern Roundhouse Add-On Stalls (933-3261, sold separately). For more realism, interior and exterior brick wall details, fine windows, floor inspection pits and much more are all standard. To make adding realistic trim to your roundhouse, wall cap tiles and pilaster caps are molded in a realistic contrasting color.

Though engines started getting bigger early in the 20th century, no one could foresee the monsters that were in regular service by the 1940s. These locos required equally large servicing areas, so some roads simply added and extended a few roundhouse stalls to handle them. This conversion kit adds three full-length stalls to the Modern Roundhouse (933-3260, sold separately). With additional kits, you can expand the basic building to any size your railroad requires.

Part #: Wal-933-3262 Modern Coaling Tower - Cornerstone Series(R) |
Click photo to see large view
|
As larger engines entered service, many railroads found their older coaling towers couldn't handle the increased demand. By the 1920s, railroads began contracting with outside firms to build new coaling towers. Concrete was the material of choice as it was easy to use, affordable, fireproof and weatherproof.
Based on an Ogle design, the Modern Coaling Tower will be a focal point in any engine terminal. And towers like this were also built on the mainline to refuel engines on the road. The model features realistic "concrete" walls plus detailed chutes and mechanisms. Like the prototype, it can serve three tracks at once, making it an ideal choice for maximizing service in minimum space. The same sturdy construction that made these towers appealing to railroads also made them hard to get rid of! With its metal parts removed for scrap, the tower could still be standing in a contemporary scene, a reminder of how things used to be.

Part #: Wal-933-3264 Machine Shop - Cornerstone Series(R)
Background Building |
Click photo to see large view |
While most roads had one major backshop, making repairs at outlying terminals was soon shown to be faster and more cost-effective. As new engine terminals were built, most received a machine shop capable of handling just about any type of repair that might be needed. This all-new kit matches the design of the Modern Roundhouse (933-3260, sold separately), and can be built as an attached or freestanding building. It also includes a boiler house, which would supply steam, electricity and compressed air to the entire facility. Large roll-up doors can be built open or closed, and the baseplate has slots that accept popular rail sizes. |

N Scalers More Variety
The
new Cornerstone Series N Scale Santa Fe-Style
Brick Depot, Santa Fe-Style Brick Freight House
and Santa Fe-Style Brick Depot w/Freight House
combination kit bring a much-requested family
of structures to N Scale. This new model is based
on depots built systemwide on the Santa Fe circa
1908. The depot features brick construction with
a large arched window on the operator’s
bay, wood eave supports and a tile roof. The
matching freight house was where express shipments
were handled. In most cases it was attached,
and the depot kit includes an extra end wall
to allow for this. The freight house kit can
also be built as a freestanding facility. Several
depots had an expanded freight room that can
be modeled by combining several freight houses.
The combination kit includes the depot and one
freight house. While the depot is based on a
common Santa Fe depot, it’s similar to
structures used by several western railroads,
so it’ll look at home on almost any layout. |

Pella Depot - Cornerstone Series® Kit |

|
- Unique Brick Design
- Stained Glass Transom Decals
- Authentic Design & Detail
- Rock Island Prototype
Railroads went to great lengths
to provide important towns with a proper depot
that projected a positive image of the community
and their company. Larger and busier towns, or
those served by more than one railroad, typically
received fancier structures with more elaborate
trim and attention to detail. While most were built
of wood, brick was sometimes chosen for its appearance,
durability and the image of strength it projected.
Such was the case with the Rock Island depot at
Pella, Iowa. This distinctive design featured brick
construction, leaded glass door transoms and a
bell roof with flowing lines that gave the structure
its unique identity. Today, the structure is on
the National Register of Historic Places and houses
a museum.
Like the prototype, this model is a unique addition to any small
town. The kit captures all the fine detail of the prototype and fits
easily on any steam- or diesel-era layout. |

All-New Kit

Detailed Trusses & Steelwork |
For
over a century, the gas works was a fixture of
American cities and towns. Long before natural
gas and electricity were common, these facilities
generated "coal gas" (a byproduct of
coke ovens) to power street lamps, home appliances
and industrial machinery.
The signature structure of any gas works, these massive storage
tanks dominated the city skyline. These black giants were actually
the last stop at the plant, used to store and pressurize the gas
before it was fed into underground pipelines to supply customers.
Gas was produced at a constant rate, so during the hours when demand
was lower and more storage capacity was needed, the tank expanded
using telescoping sections called "lifts." To keep these
aligned as they rose and fell, they rode on a series of guide rails
supported by a spider web of steel trusses on the outside of the
tank.
With its intricate detail and easy construction, this model marks
the first time an American-prototype gas storage tank is available.
A must-have for period city scenes, one or two tanks can be used
where space is limited to suggest a larger plant nearby. |

Coaling
towers are an essential part of any steam-era layout.
Based on an American prototype, this tower is typical
of those found at smaller terminals as well as stations
and junctions; similar towers were also found out on
the mainline depending on the capacity of the road's
tenders. Similar towers, constructed of wood, could
be found on most railroads from the late 1800s well
into the 1950s and a few survive on tourist and museum
lines today.
You can create a complete steam-era servicing facility
with this kit and the Modern Roundhouse (#933-3260),
which can be expanded up to a full-circle with additional
Add-on Stalls (#933-3261); Machine Shop (#933-3264),

Stock Checks:
Inventory is a fluid commodity. It changes by the
hour (sometimes by the minute). To retain our pricing structure
we maintain stock levels designed to turnover 6 times each
year. We cannot guarantee stock status till we have an order
in hand. All product is subject to prior sale. If we confirm
that we have it, and, while we are waiting for the order
it sells, you would be upset that we did not hold it.
We used to hold items but learned a VERY EXPENSIVE lesson.
When we held items for customers’ orders, the order
never materialized 80%+ of the time. We lost out on
the orders placed while the item was on hold. Also
we wasted staff time that could have been used to pull actual
orders.
Since we are well known for finding older stock the fact
that it may not be on our shelves at this minute does not
mean we can’t get it. So, as we spell out on our terms
pages, we don’t do it anymore. You may, however, call in and we will tell you if the items
are available and if possible attempt to locate what we
don’t have while you are on the phone. |
