Part #: Kat-2017-2 4-6-4 C62 #2 Steam Locomotive
Click
picture to see large view |
Built in 1948, the 4-6-4 C62 Steam Locomotive is one of the most popular passenger steam locomotives in Japan. When it was designed, the C62 was built around the existing D52 freight boiler, whose large size required equally large drivers. As a result, the C62 was the fastest and most powerful high-speed passenger steam locomotive of its day. It was used for the famous express trains “Tsubame” (Swallow) and “Hato” (Pigeon), which it pulled on the Japanese mainline between Tokyo and Osaka until 1956 – this service granting C62 #2 its signature Swallow emblems which it wears on its smoke deflectors. After the retiring from the main line, C62 #2 was used in the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido until early 1970’s, where its glorious history as a high speed passenger locomotive make it a popular sight, and eventually granted it a place of honor at the railroad museum in Kyoto.
Product features:
- New steam locomotive mechanism uses a coreless motor for silky smooth side-rod motion and creeping speeds at low voltages.
- Details specific to #2 are present, such as the Swallow emblems printed on the smoke deflectors and the white stripe that runs the length of the running board.
- Optional knuckle couplers are included along with a swappable double heading coupler on the front.

Part #: Kat-10-590 787 Kyushu Local Express "Around the Kyushu" - 6 Car Powered Set
Click
picture to see large view |
The Series 787 Electric Train was built in 1992 as an express train, named “Tsubame” (Swallow), in the westernmost Japanese island of Kyushu. Designer-built, the 787 featured not only a unique outer appearance, but also a luxurious interior, complete with high grade coach accommodations and a buffet. For many years the 787 was the symbolic train of Kyushu, though it has recently been replaced by a new, 2nd generation “Tsubame” bullet train. Today, the 787 is used for the local express trains supporting the new bullet train; however, it still maintains its service area in Kyushu, giving it the nickname “Around the Kyushu”.
Product features:
- This set has been designed to represent the modern, “Around the Kyushu” appearance and comes in a collector’s bookcase with six prototypical electric train cars.
- Includes selectable stickers to depict the multiple destinations across Kyushu.
- All passenger cars can be lit with optional 11-209 or 11-210 interior lighting kits.

The
Series M250, named "Super-Railcargo," made
its debut in March, 2004, on the Takaido
Main, a logistic artery in Japan. As the first
multi-motored
container express train for JR Freight,
the Series M250 makes its daily round-trip between
Tokyo
and Osaka in only 6 hours and 10
minutes for one way. The train hauls 28 pieces
of 31-foot container U54A in a paint scheme
dedicated to Sagawa Kyubin, a major parcel forwarder
in Japan, in a 12-car configuration.
-
It
is equally important to note the Series M250
was developed with the idea of decreasing
the amount of
CO2 in the air from high-speed cargo transport.
It is expected to decrease some
14,000 metric tons of CO2 in the air annually.

The
500 Series Shinkansen are the fastest, most powerful
and most expensive bullet trains ever to
run on Japan's Shinkansen high-speed rail network.
They are designed to be capable of 320
km/h (200 mph) although they operate at a maximum
of 300
km/h (186 mph) in service.
-
Aesthetically
modeled on a German design, the 500 series has
been in service since 1997, with the
prototype sporting a combined horsepower of 25,000hp
and each train costing over 50
million dollars to build. Due to this cost, only
9 have ever been constructed and put into service.

- JR Hokkaido in the northern main island of Japan
started operation of the Series Kiha283 Express Train "Super-Ozora" ("Blue
Sky") in 1997.
- This is a pendulum diesel train,
an improved version
of Kiha 281 operated as express "Super-Hokuto" ("Northern
Stars"). It exceeds its
predecessor in many respects, such as body shape,
passenger car equipment, state-of-art highpowered motor and linked self-controlling pendulum trucks.
- The Pendulum trucks allow the train to
sway and tilt as it runs, allowing for a smoother
ride for the passengers.
- Compared to the Kiha281, the Kiha283 has several
big differences. The ventilators are removed from the rooftop, making the train appear more
streamlined.
- The windows on the body sides, which were combined in a line on the 281, are now
clearly separated from each other.
- Furthermore, the prototype’s front display
and body-side displays use LED markers.

engine type as the EF60 type electric locomotive
(the first Japanese second-generation DC electric
locomotive type with six driven axles),
but was introduced as a new standard prime mover
due to its improved performance at higher speeds.
- The more powerful EF65’s replaced
the EF60-500 passenger locomotives in 1965, with the later series EF65-1000 locomotives
replacing their earlier designed cousins in
1974.
- Today, one can see EF65-1000 locomotives
pulling daytime freight liners between the Kansai region and Kyushu region of Japan.

The Series E257 appeared
in December 2001 to replace the Series 183 and 189,
which had been used since the
time when JR was known as JNR. Working from the basic
design of the Series E653 and E751, new
technology such as cold-weather and snow enduring structuring
has been employed on the E257. The 5-color
diamond patterns on its white body are also very unique.
It is currently operated as express trains Azusa

scenic Yamanashi and Nagano regions in the Japanese Alps. |

Each car in the Kiha85 DMU is powered by two British 350hp engines giving balancing
speeds in excess of 100 km/h on
gradients of up to 2%. Introduction of the Kiha85 DMU
brought Hida Limited Express journey times
down by 41min to 2h 9min, and cut Nanki Limited Express
timings by 51min to 3h 22min. Thanks to the shorter travel times, traffic on these
routes has been steadily increasing.

The E3 Series Shinkansen “Komachi” are new Japanese Shinkansen
high-speed trains built for the opening of the new Akita Shinkansen 'mini-Shinkansen'
line, converted from a regular 1,067 mm (3'6") narrow-gauge line between
Morioka and Akita. The line joins with the Tohoku Shinkansen.
Like the 400 Series Shinkansen, these trains are built
to a smaller loading gauge to fit on the narrower clearances
of the 'mini-Shinkansen'. The initial units built starting
in 1997 were 5-car sets, but sixth cars were built to integrate
into the existing units by the end of 1998.

Odoriko made its debut in 1990 as an express train for speedy travel between
Tokyo and resorts in scenic Izu Peninsula Province. To realize superb view,
the train was made to consist of double-decker and single high-decker cars

In 2002, 12 years after its debut, a renewal was made
on the train with new modern painting of ivory and turquoise
colors separated with a blue line. The facilities inside
the train were also then improved, including addition of

Stock Checks:
Inventory is a fluid commodity. It changes by the
hour (sometimes by the minute). To retain our pricing structure
we maintain stock levels designed to turnover 6 times each
year. We cannot guarantee stock status till we have an order
in hand. All product is subject to prior sale. If we confirm
that we have it, and, while we are waiting for the order
it sells, you would be upset that we did not hold it.
We used to hold items but learned a VERY EXPENSIVE lesson.
When we held items for customers’ orders, the order
never materialized 80%+ of the time. We lost out on
the orders placed while the item was on hold. Also
we wasted staff time that could have been used to pull actual
orders.
Since we are well known for finding older stock the fact
that it may not be on our shelves at this minute does not
mean we can’t get it. So, as we spell out on our terms
pages, we don’t do it anymore. You may, however, call in and we will tell you if the items
are available and if possible attempt to locate what we
don’t have while you are on the phone. |
