Stock Checks:
Inventory is a fluid commodity. It changes by the
hour (sometimes by the minute). To retain our pricing structure
we maintain stock levels designed to turnover 6 times each
year. We cannot guarantee stock status till we have an order
in hand. All product is subject to prior sale. If we confirm
that we have it - and - while we are waiting for the order
it sells - you would be upset that we did not hold it.
We used to hold items but learned a VERY EXPENSIVE lesson.
When we held items for customers’ orders - the order
never materialized 80%+ of the time. We lost out on
the orders placed while the item was on hold. Also
we wasted staff time that could have been used to pull actual
orders.
Since we are well known for finding older stock the fact
that it may not be on our shelves at this minute does not
mean we can’t get it. So - as we spell out on our terms
pages - we don’t do it anymore. You may - however - call in and we will tell you if the items
are available and if possible attempt to locate what we
don’t have while you are on the phone. |
Please place your order using our SECURE Shopping Cart site:
http://wig-wag-trains-cart.com/home
If you MUST send an e-mail inquiry - copy & paste the entire description TEXT ONLY (NO pictures!) from the
item you are ordering into your e-mail.
It will save time and reduce confusion in determining
what you
are inquiring about.
With the quantity of lines we carry it's not possible to memorize all of them.

History:
After the SDP40F developed issues in passenger service it was speed limited by some roads. Amtrak developed the F40PH to replce it utiizing many of the SDP40F components. When they were retired from Amtrak service Santa Fe traded several switchers for 18 of the SDP40F. They were rebuilt w/o Steam Generators and re-classed as SDF40-2. Later following comments from the engine crews the nose was modified to make it easier to mount while in motion by adding a notch, steps, and a handrail around the front. This is the version being offerred by Kato at this time. |

PROTOTYPE HISTORY:
Since the beginning of railroading in the United States, tank cars have been an essential part of the freight car fleet. From their primitive beginnings of barrels mounted to flatcars, tank cars have evolved into complex designs optimized for hauling a
variety of liquids, from corn syrup to anhydrous ammonia. While tank cars are prolific, most railroads do not own large fleets of these relatively specialized cars, preferring to make use of fleets managed by freight car companies, such as GATX. One of the larger equipment management companies, GATX can trace its history to the turn of the century, and is well-known for its large fleet of tank cars of varying designs, many of which were built in-house. One of the more distinctive designs to originate from GATX is the “TankTrain”, which made its debut in the 1970s. The TankTrain concept was a solution to the problem of long load/unload times for unit train shipments of particular commodities, such as crude oil. A typical unit train can take significant time to load or unload, with the need for workers to attach the necessary hoses and other fittings to each individual car, coupled with the necessary time to load
or unload the commodity from each car. The TankTrain was designed to significantly reduce this time. TankTrain cars are interconnected with a large-diameter, flexible hose between each car, which allows the commodity to be siphoned off at a single point at the end of a set of cars while being “pushed” at the opposite end with inert nitrogen gas. Using this method, TankTrain cars can be loaded or unloaded at a rate of approximately 3,000 gallons per minute, allowing a train of 90 cars to be loaded or unloaded in under five hours. This has the obvious benefit of increased equipment utilization, as well as reduced labor costs, and shorter dwell times at terminals. Additionally, TankTrain cars were built in various sizes and designs to handle various commodities resulting in a wide
variety of TankTrain cars roaming the nations’ rails. TankTrain cars are typically grouped into interconnected sets
ranging from two to thirteen cars, the set size varying upon the car types, commodity, and shipper being served. One of the commodities routinely handled by TankTrain cars is crude oil, whose viscous nature, and tendency to be shipped in unit train quantities, lends itself well to the TankTrain concept. The most well-known operation using TankTrain equipment was Southern Pacific railroad’s operation of these cars, on behalf of Shell Oil Company, from a loading facility in Bakersfield, California, to a refinery in Carson, California. This operation began in the early 1980s, and proved to be highly successful for Shell, allowing them economical transport of Kern County crude oil to their
refinery. Two trainsets were operated, allowing a continuous load/empty cycle to operate between the load out and the refinery. These trains were comprised of insulated cars with a 23k nominal capacity, grouped into sets of 12-13 cars, with a full train being around 75-78 cars (more or less, depending upon cars that may have been cut out of the individual sets for maintenance). This train proved to be a fairly high-priority operation on the Southern Pacific, mainly stemming from the need to make sure the loaded trains arrived at the refinery on time, in order to prevent production disruptions, as well as to make sure the warmed crude oil (heated as a result of the initial extraction process) does not cool and thicken inside of the car, which would slow down the unloading process.
These all-new Athearn N-scale models represent 23K-capacity GATX TankTrain cars from the 486-number series (built in 1977), and 282-series (built in 1982). Based upon GATX diagrams, as well as photos and field measurements taken from prototype TankTrain cars at GATX’s West Colton repair facility, these new N-scale models faithfully replicate the prototype differences between the two different series’, including variations on the tank saddles, walkways, manways, brake rigging, and transfer piping. While these cars are
most closely associated with Southern Pacific, TankTrain sets comprised of these cars have been, and can be seen in operation across the country. Grand Trunk Western, for example, operated TankTrain cars from the 486-series in the Great Lakes region, hauling fuel oil, in the late 1970s. And despite construction of a pipeline that eliminated the need for Southern Pacific’s original routing of TankTrain equipment, a new TankTrain, operated by Southern Pacific successor Union Pacific along the former SP “Coast Line”, operates to this day with many of the same cars, from a loading facility in San Ardo, California, to a refinery in Carson, California.

PROTOTYPE AND BACKGROUND INFO:
The late 1970’s were marked by a supposed shortage of modern
useable box cars in the railroad industry. Several rail industry groups argued for and got the Interstate Commerce Commission to approve the concept of incentive per diem box cars. The concept was to establish new, higher per diem rates for modern box cars as an incentive for railroads to invest in new box cars. Under the ICC car routing rules in effect at the time, cars owned
by operating companies were supposed to be routed back to their owning road as soon as possible or the host road would have to pay demurrage(car storage and handling) charges. This was the cause of a shortage of available cars and not an actual shortage of box cars numerically. As empty cars were required to be routed back to their home railroad instead of being loaded and routed to another destination. Very few small railroads had the available capital to invest in new cars. However, several leasing companies were created to provide the necessary capital for new cars. A typical arrangement between one of these leasing companies and a railroad was that the leasing company would own the cars and lease them to the railroad; the railroad would pay a base lease rate to the leasing company for each car, and a portion of per diem revenue earned by the railroad would also
be turned over to the leasing company. Many smaller railroad companies found it economical to have interchange freight equipment for the first time in their histories under these arrangements. Lumber roads were especially pleased with these arrangements, as they allowed the railroads to provide decent, modern freight cars for their lumber shippers that also happened to produce some additional income while not on home rails.
The box car boom eventually went bust, as the incentive per diem concept was found to be illegal and abolished. With lower per diem rates and a generally lackluster economy, many of the new box cars added to the nation’s rail fleet during the mid- to late 1970’s were no longer needed. The
end result was that many basically brand new box cars were returned to their home roads for storage.
Today box cars still matter to the railroads. Even with modern containerization, box cars have a higher capacity then allowable on US roads. We are finding today, that 1970’s box cars are being rebuilt and put into service for various leasing outfits. |

One of George's favorite people and incidentally a great musician with one of the most beautiful wives in the world was performing in Saskatchewan when Mr. Hockey passed away. He honored him at his next concert in Mr. Hockey's home town, Floral, Saskatchewan.
Yes we are talking about Garth. |
June 14 - Micro-Trains Line has announced their Weathered & Graffiti deliveries for this month. First, a 2-pack that originates out of the San Luis Valley of Colorado. If you come to visit George on the C&TS and don't make a side trip to Center, CO. you are missing one of the iconic shortlines of America. Not a spin-off, the ~ 30 mile San Luis Central has been serving the same potato & grain farms for generations. Independent of the D&RGW for it's entire existence yet dependent upon the Rio Grande for access to the rest of the world. Approximately 25% of the U.S. Potato crop ships out of the San Luis Valley. The SLC and the C&TS deserve your attention and a visit.
Also coming will be a single CIGX 105-xx-xxx gondola with weathering & graffiti It is also modeled from the prototype. These runs will stun your friends when they see them on your layout. Place your order ASAP if you want these accurate representations of reality.

Part #: MTL-022 00 192 - Union Pacific® - Road #: 111163 - 40’ Standard box Car w/Plug & Sliding Door |
These 40’ standard box cars with plug & sliding door are painted synthetic red with white lettering and run on Bettendorf trucks. Built in 1963 as part of series 111000-111499 these cars were used by many
railroads to transport oversized freight or finished lumber which required double door cars like these to make loading and unloading easier. The plug door allowed for freight to be stacked against it when
sealed, unlike sliding doors, allowing for increased capacity. |

November 1 - Pontification Time: While I hunkered down here in Mogote bivouacked near the RR working on the Rapido announcement (that I hope will be complete in an hour) I was listening to Sirius XM 70's on 7 for Casey Kasem's American Top 40. As he counted down to Gladys Knight & the Pips Midnight Train to Georgia (their first #1 on 10/27/73) I was once again reminded of Sunday nights spent doing homework and counting down with Kasey. Then I was troubled by all the consternation the Casem family has gone through since his passing. I sit here in the cold of the San Luis Valley and pray that they can once and finally find the peace and tranquility that Kasey brought so many of my generation especially as he concluded each week with this phrase: "Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the Stars." Now that AT40 has concluded for this week I will put in the Garth Brooks DVD from Wynn Las Vegas - the "Blame it all on My Roots" Concert. What better day can one have? |

A Note on
Stock Status:
Not all items can be in stock at all
times. Due to minimum order requirements from manufacturers
and distributors and shipping charges - we "bunch"
up re-orders to save you money. Sometimes it takes longer -
but we can continue to offer the item at a substantial discount
that way.
Confused about Reservations?
Please consider that this is the way
we pay the bills and put food on the table. Taking pre-orders
allows us to order enough to cover known demand. We attempt
to gauge (ok - guess) how many will be ordered after the order
deadline plus allow us to have the item in stock for 45-60
days after shipment by the manufacturer.
Sometimes we get it right and sometimes we don't. Occasionally -
when an item is not likely to be produced again (D&RGW
H-15-44s for example) we order beyond our guess to have a
few for longer than that.
