Pullman Standard 86’ Auto Parts Box Cars

Bluford Shops is proud to announce N scale Pullman Standard 86’ Auto Parts Box Cars in both Double and Quad Door versions. These cars have injection molded plastic bodies, etched metal details, operating knuckle couplers, accurately appearing trucks and cushion draft gear enclosures.

These cars first appeared in the mid-60s and are still in use today. Unlike general service freight cars, auto parts boxes are assigned to pools based on a mileage formula and often spend most of their time off home rails. In other words, “foreign road” cars usually out-number home road cars in a given parts train to the point that if you missed the locomotives passing, you would have a hard time telling whose train it was! That makes for colorful and interesting trains that are fun to model.

Part #: BS-86541 - Louisville & Nashville (L&N) 2nd version - Road #: TBA - 86ft Double door Hi-Cube Boxcar - Single

Louisville & Nashville 2nd version 86’ boxcars. L&N purchased hundreds of these auto-parts cars from three different builders over a 13 year period beginning in 1964. This particular group was delivered in 1968 and was initially assigned for loading on the N&W in Buffalo for delivery to several plants across much of the nation. Big plants in Louisville, Atlanta and suburban St. Louis guaranteed L&N’s membership in several big boxcar pools.

Part #: BS-86542 - Louisville & Nashville (L&N) 2nd version - Road #’s: TBA  - 86ft Double door Hi-Cube Boxcar - 2-pack

Part #: BS-86550 - Cotton Belt [SSW] (big SP logo) - new road number TBA - 86ft Double door Hi-Cube Boxcar - Single

Cotton Belt (big SP) 2nd run 86’ boxcars. This is our second run of Cotton Belt boxcars (the first was three years ago.) We will be doing two brand new road numbers. This group rolled out of the P-S Bessemer plant late in 1967 and was also initially assigned to Ford in Buffalo for loading.

Part #: BS-86551 - Cotton Belt [SSW] (big SP logo) - new road number TBA - 86ft Double door Hi-Cube Boxcar - Single

Part #: BS-86560 - Southern Pacific (big SP logo) - new road number TBA - 86ft Double door Hi-Cube Boxcar - Single

Southern Pacific (big SP) 86’ boxcars. This group was delivered by Greenville to Cotton Belt’s parent Southern Pacific almost two years later. While the gray arrows, big SP and “Hy-Cube Cushion-Car” lettering were the same, nearly all of the other lettering was different from their SSW predecessors, notably the “SOUTHERN PACIFIC” in the upper left.

Part #: BS-86561 - Southern Pacific (big SP) - new road number TBA - 86ft Double door Hi-Cube Boxcar - Single

Part #: BS-86571 - Texas & Pacific [TP] (MP Lines buzzsaw herald) - Road #: TBA - 86ft Double door Hi-Cube Boxcar - Single

Texas & Pacific (MP) 86’ boxcars. Missouri Pacific had asserted stock control over the Texas & Pacific since the 1920s but T&P remained a separate railroad with their own practices and image for four decades. However, by the time this group of cars was delivered to T&P by P-S in December of 1967, The Missouri Pacific Lines buzzsaw logo had replaced T&P’s diamond and the border between the operations had begun to blur. Nine years later, the Texas & Pacific would finally be fully merged into MoPac and even the T.P. reporting marks would gradually disappear. This group was initially assigned for loading on the New York Central in Monroe, Michigan.

Part #: BS-86572 - Texas & Pacific [TP] (MP Lines buzzsaw herald) - Road #’s: TBA  - 86ft Double door Hi-Cube Boxcar - 2-pack

Part #: BS-86580 - Chicago & Eastern Illinois [C&EI] (C&EI buzzsaw herald) - Road #: TBA  - 86ft Double door Hi-Cube Boxcar - single

Chicago & Eastern Illinois (buzzsaw) 86’ boxcars. In 1967, a dispute between the MoPac and the L&N over control of the C&EI was settled. MoPac took control of the C&EI and sold the Evansville Line and a half interest in the line from Chicago to Danville to L&N. At this point, a buzzsaw version of the C&EI logo was developed and Jenks Blue began replacing black on C&EI diesels. C&EI received this group of boxcars from Greenville in 1969 in the new standard C&EI paint scheme. The C&EI would finally be merged with MoPac in 1976.

Part #: BS-86581 - Chicago & Eastern Illinois [C&EI] (C&EI buzzsaw herald) - Road #: TBA  - 86ft Double door Hi-Cube Boxcar - single

Part #: BS-86590 - Canadian Pacific (CPAA) - as delivered - Road #: TBA  - 86ft Double door Hi-Cube Boxcar - single

Canadian Pacific CPAA as delivered 86’ boxcars. The 60s was an era of big logos and flashy paint so this large group of cars delivered by P-S in the Fall of 1967 is a notable exception for the time. The owner of this group was actually United States Railway Equipment and Canadian Pacific leased the cars from them. This may account for the paint scheme. The CPAA reporting marks were used by Canadian Pacific for cars built in the U.S., and assigned to cross-border traffic only. In this case, the cars were initially assigned for loading at a Ford plant on the DT&I in Dearborn, Michigan. Some could be seen four decades later in their original paint!  We have received a surprising number of requests for this car from our Canadian friends so we (are) happy to finally make them available in N scale.

Part #: BS-86521 - Rio Grande “Orange” single - Road #: TBA - 86ft Double-door Hi-Cube

Rio Grande received this group of cars from Greenville in late 1969. They were originally assigned for loading at a Ford plant on the Penn Central in Utica, Michigan. Rio Grande had no auto assembly plants on their line but their position as a bridge route between the Midwest and West Coast obliged them to contribute cars to several pools. As a result these cars were often found far from home rails.

Part #: BS-86522 - Rio Grande “Orange” 2-pack - Road #’s: TBA - 86ft Double-door Hi-Cube

Part #: BS-86531 - Detroit & Toledo Shore Line single - Road #: TBA - 86ft Double-door Hi-Cube

Detroit & Toledo Shore Line received this batch of cars from Greenville in 1969. The D&TS was just 50 miles long linking Detroit with Toledo but was double tracked and handled a large volume of traffic. Grand Trunk Western and Norfolk & Western (formerly Nickel Plate) each owned a 50% interest in the line. Nickel Plate had bought into the line to have a friendly connection to reach Detroit and GTW used it to reach Toledo. As you can see, the tilted square logo resembles GTW’s pre-1960 logo, while their black and yellow diesel paint scheme resembled that of the other parent Nickel Plate Road. It’s position gave it a vital role in the movement of auto parts. In 1981, GTW bought N&W’s share and merged the line into its system (leaving N&W to use their former Wabash routes to reach
Detroit.) These cars joined the GTW fleet, some remaining in this paint scheme for close to two decades.

Part #: BS-86532 - Detroit & Toledo Shore Line 2-pack - Road #’s: TBA - 86ft Double-door Hi-Cube

Part #: BS-86491 - Santa Fe (AUTO PARTS) [ATSF] - Road #: TBA - 86’ Double Door boxcar - Single

Just in time for Christmas of 1967, Santa Fe received this batch of Santa-Suit-Red boxcars from Pullman Standard.  Okay, it’s actually “Santa Fe Indian Red.”  These included the big “AUTO PARTS” lettering that would be omitted from cars delivered in later years.  These cars were assigned to the New York Central agent in Monroe, Michigan for the loading of Ford body panels.  The red with silver doors and roof and black and white ends make this car really stand out.

Part #: BS-86492 - Santa Fe (AUTO PARTS) [ATSF] - Road #’s: TBA - 86’ Double Door boxcars - 2-Pack

Part #: BS-86501 - Southern (Serves The South/Super Cushion Service) - Road #: TBA - 86’ Double Door boxcar - Single

Southern received these cars from Pullman Standard in the Summer of 1966 in this paint scheme. This group was initially assigned for loading at Ford’s stamping plant on the N&W (previously Wabash) in Buffalo, New York (note the “BUFF” below the road number.)  Southern’s inclusion in this multi-railroad pool of cars was based on having a Ford assembly plant on their line in Georgia.  However, Southern cars in this pool could move stampings from the Buffalo plant to any Ford plant anywhere in the country as demand required.  This is typical of how auto-parts car pools operated.

Part #: BS-86502 - Southern (Serves The South/Super Cushion Service) - Road #: TBA - 86’ Double Door boxcars - 2-Pack

Part #: BS-86511 - Arkansas & Missouri (AM) - Road #: TBA - 86’ Double Door boxcar - Single

Arkansas & Missouri launched operations in 1986 as a spin-off of Burlington Northern. The line runs 140 miles from Fort Smith, Arkansas to Monett, Missouri.  This was originally a Frisco route.  A&M is notable for its all-Alco diesel fleet and seasonal passenger excursions.  A&M has no auto parts traffic but does service a paper mill and it is thought these big cars are used for moving low density paper products.  (That’s right, no 2-pack for this run.)

Part #: BS-86461 Canadian Pacific (CPAA) - Road #: TBA - Single - 86ft Double door Hi-Cube boxcar
In 1996, CP Rail changed their name back to Canadian Pacific Railway. This paint scheme was the result. This group of cars was originally delivered by Pullman Standard in 1967 in an austere brown with only reporting marks. Over the years many were repainted in CP Rail colors and finally this paint scheme. The CPAA reporting marks mean these cars are assigned to international service, moving parts between plants in the United States and Canada. The white conspicuity stripes are a feature of CP's new paint scheme standards and actually predate the FRA reflector stripe mandate by nine years.

Part #: BS-86471 Illinois Central Gulf/CN - (ICG) - Road #: TBA - Single - 86ft Double door Hi-Cube boxcar

ICG was born from the 1972 merger of Illinois Central and Gulf Mobile & Ohio.  In 1985, they began selling off routes to new regional railroads with the goal of getting down to a core Chicago-to-the-Gulf business.  With most of the former GM&O in the hands of others or abandoned, Illinois Central Gulf dropped the “Gulf” from their name in 1988.  They also left behind two decades of orange paint and adopted gray for boxcars.  Eleven years later, the “new” Illinois Central was purchased by Canadian National.  At this point, CN logos began to appear on IC rolling stock.  One might ask why cars would be painted with the current CN logo and Illinois Central Gulf lettering when the "Gulf" had been dropped years before.  This is probably due to wording in the original equipment trust and lease agreements since a large percentage of the repainted fleet carries this lettering.  Some of these cars have been painted brown instead of gray so we are including one of the brown cars in the 2-pack.

Part #: BS-86481 Western Pacific - 2nd version (WP) - Road #: TBA - Single - 86ft Double door Hi-Cube boxcar

Western Pacific’s Pullman Standard built auto parts boxcars were delivered in the “Distribution Dividend” scheme (see Bluford 86191 and 86192) in 1967. As these cars came due for repainting, they received this scheme. WP had a large Ford plant on line in Milpitas, California obliging them to contribute cars to a pool including many other railroads and several auto plants in the Midwest and South.

Part #: BS-86441 Golden West Service  Galveston Railroad (GVSR) - Road #: TBA - Single - 86ft Double door Hi-Cube boxcar
Golden West Service was established in 1990 with an agreement between Southern Pacific and Greenbrier Industries. A wide range of freight cars from the SP, Cotton Belt, and Rio Grande fleets that were in need of rebuilding, gradually made their way to Greenbrier’s Gunderson railcar plant. They emerged in Golden West Services paint and resumed their roles under the management of SP. Because of the structure of the deal, Greenbrier was required to apply common carrier reporting marks (no private owner marks ending in X) to these cars so they made a deal with Galveston Railroad (GVSR),
Ventura County Railway (VCY), Coe Rail (CRLE) and for a short time Kansas City Southern (KCS) to use their reporting marks. Ultimately, the Golden West fleet would grow to exceed 10,000 cars. This group of former Cotton Belt cars was assigned GVSR marks.

Part #: BS-86451 Seaboard System (SBD) - Road #: TBA - Single - 86ft Double door Hi-Cube boxcar

Seaboard System was the result of the January, 1983 consolidation of The Family Lines into one railroad. The family tree looks like this: Prior to 1967, Atlantic Coast Line controlled Louisville & Nashville who together jointly operated the Clinchfield and jointly controlled the Georgia Railroad who in turn controlled Atlanta & West Point and Western Railway of Alabama. In 1967, ACL merged with Seaboard Air Line to become Seaboard Coast Line. In 1974, The Family Lines image was adopted on many freight cars for all of the above railroads. The railroads remained separate and The Family
Lines was simply a joint marketing image. Then on January 1, of 1983 all of the Family Lines roads were actually merged into Seaboard Coast Line who then changed their name to “Seaboard System.”

Part #: BS-86421 Norfolk & Western - Claytor scheme- Road #: TBA - Single - 86ft Double door Hi-Cube boxcar
Norfolk & Western - Claytor scheme. In 1982, Norfolk & Western and Southern Railway formed a new holding company (called Norfolk Southern Corporation) to own both railroads. Shortly after, N&W adopted this paint scheme for freight cars. Dubbed the Claytor scheme after the head of the parent company, this would remain N&W’s standard freight car scheme until the adoption of the Norfolk Southern image for rolling stock several years later.

Part #: BS-86422 Norfolk & Western - Claytor scheme- Road #s: TBA - 2 Pack - 86ft Double door Hi-Cube boxcar
Part #: BS-86431 Conrail - medium logo  - Road #: TBA - Single - 86ft Double door Hi-Cube boxcar

Conrail - medium logo. After a couple of years of experimenting with various lettering arrangements for their massive autoparts car fleet, around 1978, Conrail finally settled on this version featuring logo stencils that could be easily handled in the paint shop. Around the same time many cars, these included, were receiving U-1 inspection dots (seen to the right of the con-stencil.) Also during this period, many Conrail and Chessie 60 and 86 foot boxcars were undergoing inspections of their centerplates, resulting in another larger yellow inspection dot applied to the left of the road number. This dot included shop data for the centerplate inspection.

Part #: BS-86411 Milwaukee Road - Road #: TBA - Single - 86ft Double door Hi-Cube boxcar
Milwaukee Road - as built. Milwaukee Road received these cars from Pullman Standard in December of 1967 in this paint scheme. This group was initially assigned for loading Ford body panels on the New York Central in Monroe, Michigan.

Part #: BS-86401 Norfolk Southern - Road #: TBA - Single - 86ft Double door Hi-Cube boxcar

Norfolk Southern - large logo. In the last several years, Norfolk Southern began painting these boxcars with a much larger version of the flying NS logo. In 2005, yellow reflector (conspicuity) stripes began to appear on freight cars around the nation in response to new FRA regulations.

Item Description

Stock Checks:

Inventory is a fluid commodity.  It changes by the hour (sometimes by the minute). To retain our pricing structure we maintain stock levels designed to turnover 6 times each year. We cannot guarantee stock status till we have an order in hand. All product is subject to prior sale. If we confirm that we have it, and, while we are waiting for the order it sells, you would be upset that we did not hold it.
We used to hold items but learned a VERY EXPENSIVE lesson. When we held items for customers’ orders, the order never materialized 80%+ of the time.  We lost out on the orders placed while the item was on hold.  Also we wasted staff time that could have been used to pull actual orders.
Since we are well known for finding older stock the fact that it may not be on our shelves at this minute does not mean we can’t get it. So, as we spell out on our terms pages, we don’t do it anymore.
You may, however, call in and we will tell you if the items are available and if possible attempt to locate what we don’t have while you are on the phone.
